Tonight after dinner I am going to indulge in a film I just recently discovered through reading Nina Power’s One-Dimensional Woman (read it here). In her Chapter, Consumer Culture: Girls on Film, she talks about the ‘Bechdel Test’ which consists of the following rules for film:
- Does it have at least two women in it,
- Who [at some point] talk to each other.
- About something besides men
Adding the topics marriage and babies to no. 3 wipes out 50% of the films that do otherwise pass the test.
The only film that passes (according to her) is Vera Chytilova’s 1966 surrealist masterpiece Daisies. I have seen the trailer and I am salivating over the idea of digesting this surrealist strangeness. I will write a few mumblings post-digest.
